FAQ

Will It Hurt?

Periodontal exams can be performed with little or no discomfort.

Do I Need X-Rays?

We will need current periodontal x-rays in order to see disease not otherwise visible. You may request that your x-rays be forwarded to us from your referring dentist.

What Will It Cost?

Since all treatments are varied, your periodontist must complete your examination before establishing your treatment planning and fee. The fees can vary considerably depending on the type of problems and the complexity and length of the peridontal treatment. An approximate fee can usually be determined at the initial visit; but occasionally, some initial treatment or further diagnostics must be completed before the final treatment planning can be established. Our philosophy of practice is to treat as conservatively as possible to attain treatment goals.

Will My Insurance Cover the Cost?

Dental insurance policies often cover periodontal treatment. Please bring all medical and dental benefit information and cards to your examination appointment. Although not required by most plans, we will submit a claim to predetermine your insurance benefits upon your request.

Will I Need Surgery?

Not everyone needs periodontal surgery. If treated early, gum disease can be controlled without surgery. We will make recommendations based on your individual situation. Our philosophy of practice is to treat as conservatively as possible to attain treatment goals.

Can My Teeth Be Saved?

The recent advances in periodontal treatment allow us to successfully treat most teeth.

What If I Don’t Have Gum Treatment?

Periodontal disease is a progressive, painless infection. Delay can cause further bone loss and a greater expense. Dentures are never as effective as your own natural teeth.

POST-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS

You have “glue” over the graft site. Pieces of the glue may come off, this is normal. Please do not take it off yourself. If it still remains in place at your first post-op appointment Dr. Hoffman will remove it. Should the glue come off, it appears and feels like a piece of hard blue/purple “plastic”.

Medication

Medication to relieve discomfort should be taken every four hours the day of the procedure, from then on you should take it only when you feel it is necessary. (If you experience discomfort in between taking the Toradol you can take 1000mg of Tylenol {2 extra strength or 3 regular} if needed). (DO NOT COMBINE WITH ADVIL, MOTRIN, ASPIRIN OR ANY OTHER NSAID’S). Dr. Hoffman may prescribe antibiotics to aid in the healing of the bone, please take the prescription as directed.
